Bayou City Heirloom
Bulbs began as a love of flowering things. It quickly became a
passion to find and nurture the old-time bulbs, corms etc. grown by
our ancestors.
My mission is to track down and hunt out as many of the old hard-to-find bulbs etc., and old-time flowering perennials that our
forbearers grew and required a minimum amount of care, water, etc.
To this end I have added a number of flowering perennials and in a
new direction, several terrestrial orchids that are hardy to
probably the low 40 degrees.
Just a few of the varieties that we have
available.

Byzantinus gladiolus:
Byzantine corms can be planted September through October. They will
bloom the following spring. Ordinary garden soil will do, they bloom
in sun and partial shade. Always water well at planting time and
during growth. After
blooming, decrease water as they are going
dormant and need less moisture until active growth the following
fall. The
gladiolus are available and
should be shipped
Aug. through Oct.

Parrot Gladiolas: Planting
time is in the Fall. Blooming time is in the spring. Colors are
red/orange - yellow. Plants get to be close to 5'tall. They take
full sun or partial shade. Some varieties produce seeds, others do
not, but they all produce cormlets at the base of the mother corm,
and in turn grow to blooming size in a few seasons. These corms can
be left in the ground year round in the southern states.

Rhodophiala bifida:
Pink
Oxbloods can be successfully planted any time of year, but ideally,
while they are dormant, since oxbloods bloom in the fall. August
through September is the blooming season for the oxblood lilies.
They begin to break ground
usually in early August and as the
month progresses and the fall rain begin, the bloom spikes enlarge
and grow taller. Oxblood lilies
are available and should be
shipped May
and June,
during their dormant period. Sometimes this far south the oxbloods
don't always lose their foliage, but are still in a dormant state.
After shipment, if planted right away, these bulbs will sink down
their roots and
reward you with their beautiful blossoms.
